APRIL 2007: UNUSUAL SUSPECTS. For anyone eager to find a highly unusual fragrance, these two new olfactory offerings will fit the bill. Smiley eau de parfum claims to not only make you smell good, but to also make you feel good. Billed as the first unisex, anti-depressant fragrance, Smiley uses a biochemical formula which blends theobromine and phenylethylamine from pure cocoa extract with more traditional notes of bergamot and patchouli to create its happifying formulas. On the other hand, the scent of a few of Etat Libre d’Orange’s concotions might not be pleasing, but they are certainly intriguing. Putain des Palaces (Hotel Slut) is a sexy mix of powder, leather and violet, Vraie Blonde (Real Blonde) melds aldehydic notes with pink champagne and white pepper, and Secretions Magnifiques (Magnificent Secretions) is a musky, metallic scent meant to mirror blood, sweat, sperm, and saliva. The brand hits its highest note with Jasmin et Cigarette, a sultry mélange of tonka beans, jasmine and tobacco that rest like a smoky haze on the skin. Strange has never smelt so good. FV
Smiley and Etat Libre d’Orange are available at Henri Bendel, NYC.
